Medical Advances and the Potential Uses of Cord Blood

January 9, 2008 – 6:00 pm

In recent years, medical advances in the realm of stem cell research have increased significantly, with a growing number of new announcements almost every month. With transplant science improving each year, it will only be a matter of time before treatments will be developed for currently non-treatable conditions and diseases.

There do exist private companies that are helping “expand” the population of stem cells in the laboratory and some of their methods are entering clinical trials. However, there still remains much misunderstanding about the evolution of stem cells in the body. Recent research does indicate, though, that cord blood stem cells have the potential to grow into specialized types of tissue other than blood.

It is because of these recent and ongoing advancements in stem cell research that scientists are hopeful about the potential future uses of cord blood cells in treating a wider variety of diseases.
